Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Supervisor

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Director, Support Services, the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Supervisor is responsible for the development of recreational activities as a part of the IP Goals and/or enrichment for each individual served by CSAAC. The incumbent will implement some activities and coordinate with other agencies in the community for participation in various recreation classes and programs. The incumbent is expected to be available on evenings and weekends to supervise the implementation of group recreational activities as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:                 Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation required, Master’s preferred.

 

Experience:               Minimum of two (2) years experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Skills:                         Strong programmatic skills in the area of Therapeutic Recreation required. Must possess excellent planning and problem-solving skills, with the ability to devise creative solutions to program issues. An independent worker with leadership skills to guide and supervise Direct Support Staff during recreation activities. Strong collaborative skills needed, with the ability to marshal and coordinate internal (e.g. staff, other programs, etc.) and external resources (e.g. community groups and leaders, etc.), to meet program objectives. Computer literacy required with a proficiency in standard business software applications (e.g. word processing, e-mail and spreadsheet).

 

 

NATURE AND SCOPE

 

·         Schedules, implements and supervises group recreational activities as appropriate. (e.g., Bingo, cooking classes, exercise classes, group games [volleyball, dodge ball or basketball] group arts and crafts activities, etc. Ensures scheduled group activities are incorporated into the individual daily, weekly or monthly schedules.  Schedules group recreational activities at least two (2) evenings per week and on weekend; implements additional group sessions as appropriate to keep participation levels at the specified maximums. Schedules & implements recreational activities during the day for unemployed or underemployed individuals in the Vocational Program, in consultation with the Director of Vocational Services and Psychologist.  Coordinates evening recreational programs.

 

·         Keeps track of billing of the individuals for recreation classes and coordination fees. Ensures accuracy. Submits this to the Director and then to accounting on regular intervals to be determined by course session, usually twelve weeks.

 

·         Assists with matching individuals to community integrated activities, (e.g. taking a class at Montgomery College, participating in a Walk/Run event put on by a local community group, etc).  Assist in selection and registration of those individuals to be involved.

 

·         Collaborates with other agencies to expand the activities and options available in a mutually beneficial way, (e.g. basketball games under the auspices of another agency that has a gym).  Oversee coordination of individual involvement with CSAAC basketball team and observe practice.

 

·         Works with the Coordinators to ensure individuals show up to events as scheduled, participate while in attendance and remain for the allotted time, according to their individual schedules.

 

·         Consults with individual, vocational staff and residential staff on possible activities to do at home. May visit group homes and consults on activities for the individuals within the homes, including in-home recreational opportunities.

 

·         Plans and coordinates at least one large scale activity per month involving at least 25 individuals. 

 

·         Develop, organize and maintain a records system for the recreation activities department.  Develop documentation and recreational forms for tracking individual involvement and progress as well as sign-in sheets for recreational opportunities.

 

·         Prior to the annual meeting, works with the Residential Coordinators to assist them in developing recreational activities for each individual consistent with their IP Goals and abilities. Recommends the actual activities as well as the methods for completion of the activities as appropriate.

 

 

REQUIRED TRAINING/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

 

·         Completion and demonstration of techniques taught in the Behavioral Principles and Strategies Training (BPS).

 

·         Successfully complete annual recertification of the BPS.

 

 

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

 

Employee must be able to effectively complete a non-adverse physical intervention with autistic individuals of varying heights, weights and levels of physical strength according to the guidelines presented in Behavioral Principles and Strategies training.
