On November 16, 2006, CSAAC launched a new tradition of celebrating community support by hosting the first annual CSAAC Honors Gala.  Each year, a different community member will be honored for supporting the cause of autism and raising awareness of CSAAC’s services.  This year’s honoree was Mr. Abe Pollin, owner of the Washington Wizards basketball team and Washington Sports and Entertainment.  Mr. Pollin was the original owner of our Brookeville campus school site, which CSAAC acquired 3 years ago.  When he was the owner of the property, he had a dream to turn it into a school for children with autism. Now, this site is our premier school campus and not only houses our one of our education program sites, but our Early Intervention and Family Support/After School program services as well, and has become a key location for critical services offered by CSAAC.

At the gala, Mr. Pollin was given a crystal award, and a commemorative plaque was presented to him as well– this plaque will hang at the main entrance of the Brookeville school site.  Brian Mitchell, former Washington Redskin, was also given a crystal award and inaugurated into the “CSAAC Hall of Fame” for demonstrating his caring for individuals with autism.  In addition, Karen McManus of Congressman Chris Van Hollen’s office presented Mr. Pollin with a proclamation in honor of his support of CSAAC.  Ayda Sanver, Director of Community Development, debuted a brand new 30-second public service announcement (PSA) which will be distributed locally (click here to view).
